Onions are one of the most important products in Swiss vegetable production. In terms of surface area, yellow edible Onions are the second largest crop in the open field after carrots.

Annual per capita consumption of Onions of all varieties exceeds 5 kg. Unlike many vegetables, Onions are available for purchase year-round because they are grown nationally, which can be explained by a high degree of self-sufficiency, accounting for about 90 percent of total demand. In the whole of Switzerland, about 1,300 hectares are planted with edible Onions.
