Recently, the Czech Rohlik Group announced a cooperation with Apeel Sciences of the United States to apply the plant coating developed by the latter to the preservation of oranges. At present, oranges and tangerines with plant preservation coatings are already on the market in Europe.

Apeel Sciences company extracts lipids and glycerides from leaves, stems, banana peels and other fresh plant materials discarded after picking and processing fruits and vegetables, and powders are made through certain techniques, mixed with water, and sprayed on the surface of the fruits, and dried After the formation of a thin protective film. This protective film can restrict water and carbon dioxide from overflowing from fruits and vegetables, while restricting oxygen from entering. In this way, the freshness and shelf life of fruits and vegetables can be greatly extended. The coating is only a few hundred nanometers thick and is completely made of plant raw materials, is colorless, odorless, and harmless to the human body.
Apeel Sciences said the patented formula can extend the life of fruits and vegetables by 2-3 times. At the same time, Apeel also introduced Invisipeel, which can repel pests and fungi, and Edipeel, which is used before fruit picking, which can reduce the use of pesticides and make the fruit less prone to spoilage.
