In 2018, global avocado production reached 6.4 million tons, an increase of 6% over the previous year. From 2007 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of global output was 5.3% under the conditions of large increase of planting area and moderate increase of unit yield.
Mexico remains the world's largest exporter, with about 1.1 million tons, or 45% of global exports, worth $2.4 billion, well ahead of Peru (361,000 tons), the Netherlands (246,000 tons) and Chile (133,000 tons).
Among the importing countries, the United States still leads the world in imports of 1 million tons, accounting for 43% of the world's total imports. The Netherlands ranked second, with about 258,000 tons, followed by France (144,000 tons), Britain (118,000 tons) and Spain (115,000 tons).
China's imports last year were only 54,000 tons, far from the major importing countries, so it also has great potential to be exploited. From 2007 to 2018, China's imports grew by more than 136.2%, which is already the fastest growing importer in the world.
