In 2019, Egypt's total exports of fresh oranges amounted to 1.7 million tons, accounting for 38% of global exports in 2019.
According to the Egyptian Independent, Egypt's financial firm ASWAQ Financial statistics show that Egypt has topped the list of fresh orange exporters for the second year in a row, with total exports of 1.7 million tonnes in 2019, accounting for 38 percent of global fresh orange exports in 2019.
ASWAQ explains that in order to meet global demand for citrus fruits, Egyptian farmers are developing citrus cultivation vigorously, taking advantage of local climate conditions conducive to citrus growth. It is understood that in the past decade, the number of orange trees planted in Egypt has increased by 44%, and more than 12 million orange trees are currently planted, with a production capacity of about 3.45 million tons, an increase of 1.05 million tons over 2.4 million tons in 2009.
Russia leads the country in importing Egypt's fresh oranges, with 284,000 tonnes in 2019, followed by Saudi Arabia (271,000 tonnes), China (214,000 tonnes) and the Netherlands (130,000 tonnes).
